The Oblast has seen uprisings led by Yemelyan Pugachev and Stepan Razin, national liberation movements led by Srym Datuly, Isatai Taimanov and Makhambet Utemisov, and battles of the 35th Infantry Division under the command of V.I. Chapayev, a hero of the Civil War.
